Victoria Coren Mitchell’s poker face breaks into a smile after £400,000 win

November 7, 2015 by Marilyn Leave a Comment

The writer, broadcaster and poker player Victoria Coren Mitchell has become the first person to win Europe’s biggest poker game twice, taking her lifetime’s winnings to £1.5 million.

She won £391,932 in a tense finale last night in which she fought back from eighth place in the European Poker Tour, a week-long international tournament.

A member of the elite Team PokerStars Pro, Coren Mitchell, 41, who is married to the comedian David Mitchell, became the first female European Poker Tour champion in 2006 when she took the top £500,000 prize. She beat Giacomo Fundaro, the Italian champion, in the finale, held in Sanremo, Italy.

Coren Mitchell, the daughter of the satirist Alan Coren and host of the TV quiz Only Connect, said: “I’m not a person that poker players always take very seriously because I’m a girl, I’m British, I have another job and I play mostly for fun. So it gave me a bit of a thrill.”
